How to use SpamAssassin

SpamAssassin is a great anti-spam tool. We recommend activating it as soon as you create an account or log in for the first time.

To enable and disable SpamAssassin, please do the following:

  1. Log in to cPanel through your dashboard.

  2. Click on My cPanel. If you have more than one domain associated with your HostPapa account, click on the appropriate domain link, then enter your cPanel password if required.

  3. Go to the Mail section.

  4. Click on the Spam Filters icon.

  5. Click Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam  button to enable it.

  6. Click Process New Emails and Mark them as Spam button to disable it.

Required Score:

5 means everything will be marked as spam.

5 is the default.

10 means nothing will be marked as spam.

Just set up SpamAssassin once and it works for all of your account’s emails. SpamAssassin will mark your spam so it is easy to notice (you can even have SpamAssassin automatically delete those emails).

NOTE: You may not be able to save the Required Score in the drop-down feature. Instead, you must click the Configure SpamAssassin button at the very bottom, change the value for required_score, and then click the Save button at the bottom.

Advanced configuration

The last section of the SpamAssassin page gives you access to advanced configuration settings. When you click the Show Additional Configurations button, you’ll be able to see advanced options:

For blacklist/whitelist:

  • Blacklist domain names or specific email addresses in the blacklist_from sections, ensuring that all messages from the specified domain or email address are flagged as spam. Enter one domain name or email address per line:
    • Blacklist an email from a specific email address: Enter person@domain.com
    • Blacklist all emails from a specific domain: Enter *@domain.com or *.domain.com
  • Set a required spam score. This setting is the same as the one you set in the Filters section of the main Apache SpamAssassin page. This field allows you to further your numerical score settings; you could, for example, set the score to 4.3. Experiment to see what works best for your situation. (The remaining score items are for specific settings related to more detailed Apache SpamAssassin configuration. HostPapa recommends you leave these as they are, unless otherwise instructed.)
  • Whitelist domain names or specific email addresses in the whitelist_from sections, ensuring that such messages are never flagged as spam. Enter one domain name or email address per line:
    • Whitelist an email from a specific email address: Enter person@domain.com
    • Whitelist all emails from a specific domain: Enter *@domain.com or *.domain.com
