How to install or uninstall a language pack in Moodle 3

More than 100 language packs are currently available for Moodle 3 and you can install as many language packs as you need for your site with little to no impact on Moodle performance. To install, update, or uninstall language packs, log in to your Moodle site as an administrator and go to Site administration > Language > Language packs to open the Language Import Utility.

Installing language packs

In the Language import utility, select the languages you want to install. Hold down the Ctrl or Apple key to select and install multiple languages. Click Install selected language pack(s).

Parent and child language packs

Some language packs include only a subset of the language. In these cases, you must install both a parent language pack and the child, or subset, language pack. Child language packs that require a parent language pack are listed in the table below:

Child language pack Parent language pack
ca_valencià ca
de_du, de_kids, de_comm de
en_us, en_ar, en_kids en
es_ve, es_co es

Updating language packs

Language packs are frequently updated by Moodle, so you should check for updates regularly, especially if you have several language packs installed. The English language pack is updated automatically each time the site is upgraded.

Update all installed language packs

To update all installed language packs, open the Language import utility and click Update all installed language packs.

Update selected language packs

You can choose to update only some of your installed language packs. To know which language packs have updates available, check both the Installed language packs and Available language packs lists. If a language appears in both lists, an update is available.

Select the language packs in the Available language packs list and click Install selected language pack(s). Hold down the Ctrl or Apple key to select multiple language packs.

Uninstalling language packs

In the Language import utility, select the language pack you want to uninstall in the Installed language packs list and click Uninstall selected language pack(s). Hold down the Ctrl or Apple key to select multiple language packs.
